Description Translation of a 2000-year-old comedy Curculio by Roman playwright Titus Maccius Plautus was made to render this as-yet untranslated play accessible to Czech readership and audience. Furthermore, the translators wanted to take the challenge of translating Plautine palliate to modern Czech, a genre which is difficult to adapt in the full scope of its various dramatic features. The interdisciplinary translators' team (a specialist in the Archaic Latin, in the Ancient Drama, and in Classical Law) adopted several distinct dramaturgical techniques in the translation: extrapolation (elaborating on the culturally-dependent phenomena potentially unknown to the modern recipient), substitution (e.g. "the good Phalernian wine" instead of "merum"), and added character - Ms Reference Underline, who explains still other non-familiar issues.
