Description The text deals with the fi rst attempts to reform the economic aspects of the functioning of universities within the so-called Humboldtian concept. He points to Prussian patterns and in the work of Friedrich Althoff and seeks his counterpart in Austria and Czechoslovakia. It presents the motivations and arguments of critics from the academic environment, from the political leadership of the state as well as from industrial circles and the army. Political representation enforced very little of the area tools for increasing the work efficiency of universities in the period under review, rather several lonely projects were created, some of which achieved economic self-sufficiency.
