Citation
Description The book asks the question of the interrelationship between academic self-governing privileges and the social responsibility of universities. In doing so, it brings historical arguments and experience to the current debate about the state and prospects of higher education. The authors examine the journey that domestic higher education has taken from the modernization of universities in the Habsburg Empire (1849) to the closure of Czech universities by the Nazis (1939). An era in which universities achieved an exceptional position in society, with the guarantee of state funding and generous self-government, all with the expectation that they would fulfil the role of a showcase of national maturity and an expert centre of innovation.
