Description The text focuses on explanatory passages in the two most recent Czech history textbooks for secondary schools, as well as one current Austrian and one Polish textbook. Using content analysis and comparison, it examines how the authors write about the 1990s. It concludes that Czech textbooks devote the least space to the decade under review and focus mainly on political and economic topics. At the same time, they try to separate the decade after 1989 as much as possible from the "old regime" and work least with the principle of continuity. Compared to the Polish and especially the Austrian textbooks, the 1990s are presented less comprehensively in both Czech textbooks. Based on the research, the Taktik textbook is rated as the least high-quality, even though, compared to the Didaktis textbook, its authors were able to benefit from both the expansion of activity-based and research-based teaching in Czech history education and the growing production of academic works on the 1990s. Both Czech textbooks omit topics such as the politics of memory, racism, queer issues, media, housing, crime, as well as culture and civil society, and, unlike the Austrian textbook, do not lead students to a civically active and (self-)reflective understanding of the past.
