Popis The ciborium of the Basilica of Sant'Ambrogio in Milan is an exceptional object for several reasons: executed in stucco and with some traces of the original polychromy preserved, it is an emblematic monument to the European aesthetic of the last quarter of the 10th century. Often studied as an isolated work, the ciborium is actually born in very close dialogue with the primitive Ambrosian basilica. Re-contextualized, the object can be interpreted, on an iconological and conceptual level, as a real keystone of the millenarian history of the Milanese basilica. Another crucial aspect: it is only through the gaze and the movement of the spectator that the ciborium can be understood in its complexity. The aim of my conference is therefore to describe the close dialogue between object and context before attempting to present, a true and proper of imaginary dance between spectator and monument. The body of one who enters the basilica is in fact the medium through which the concept of the ciborium can be fully realized.
