Popis We distinguish two basic types of cardinal numerals: object- and abstract-counting numerals. In a varied set of languages, we track the morphological marking of these two types of numerals. As a starting point, we distinguish between simplex and complex abstract-counting numerals. We argue that these numerals form the semantic base of object-counting numerals, which are derived from them by the addition of a semantic component that turns the number denoted by the numeral into an object-counting device. Then we argue that there are three distinct ways of realizing morphologically the object-counting function relative to the abstract-counting base.
