Turkish Academy Summer School

Turkish Academy is a joint summer school programme of Masaryk University, University of Hamburg, and the publishing house Větrné mlýny. It will take place in July 2018 and will form an integral part of the biggest literary festival in Central Europe, Author’s Reading Month (http://www.autorskecteni.cz/en). In July 2018, this festival is going to welcome 31 leading Turkish writers.

About the Turkish Academy Summer School

The program is open to anyone who would like to gain some basic insight into Turkish culture, history, literature, and politics. The lecturers of Turkish Academy come from various Central European countries and Turkey. Our aim is to prepare a mixture of information about contemporary Turkey as well as its rich history and offer the unique opportunity to meet daily with Turkish writers. The teaching language is English.

Turkish Academy is open to university students from all over the world. The courses are designed not just for students of Turkish studies but also for other university students who touch upon topics concerning Turkey in various areas of studies (e.g. art history, history, political science, international relations, Central European studies, literature, translation studies, etc.).

Every week the lectures will be centered around a different topic. These modules can be combined to the participant’s convenience, so full participation (4 weeks) as well as partial (from 1 to 3 weeks) is possible.

Transcript of records (from Masaryk University) will be issued after completing all academic requirements. The credit value of each module is 2 ECTS; participants can get between 2 to 8 ECTS credits depending on the length of their stay).

The main benefits of Turkish Academy are:

  • Daily meetings with contemporary Turkish writers who will be guests at the Author’s Reading Month at the time.

  • Introduction to Turkish
  • Ottoman history
  • Ottoman culture
  • Ottoman literature
  • Mustafa Kemal Atatürk’s Turkey
  • Turkey in the 21st century (lecture in the area of political science)
  • Islam and Turkey (comparative lecture within the context of other Islamic countries)
  • Modern/Contemporary Turkish literature
  • Modern/Contemporary Turkish culture (music, theater, fine arts, film)
  • Media training (workshop)

Structure of teaching:

Monday to Friday

09.00–10.00/ breakfast with a Turkish writer – workshop

10:30–12.00/ lectures, seminars

14:00-15:30/ lectures, seminars 

19.00–21.00 / meeting with a Turkish writer, author’s reading

Masaryk University students can participate in the program without a fee. Small fees might be however charged only for optional extracurricular activities and/or dining events.
