Popis	The article explores the relevance of the background/foreground distinction for sociology in general and cultural sociology in particular. It applies this distinction to diverse subjects like the sacred, normative orders and collective identities. It concludes with a reflection on the background of scientific knowledge and a plea for a reflexive cultural sociology.
