| Popis | The presented article focuses on a more comprehensive analysis of process of mortality in Slovakia from the second half of the 19th century to the beginning of the 20th century, with a special emphasis on regional differences between individual counties. Mortality, as one of the key demographic processes affecting the natural movement of the population, is examined through synthetic indicators, primarily life expectancy at birth and infant mortality, which simultaneously provide an indirect picture of the health status and living conditions of the population. The research uses historical data published by the Hungarian Royal Statistical Office, which allows a detailed view of mortality rates in individual regions of Slovakia. The findings confirm a permanent decrease in mortality and a simultaneous increase in life expectancy, however, this process took place unevenly and was accompanied by significant regional disparities. The highest mortality rate and the lowest life expectancy were recorded mainly in the western counties, especially Bratislava, Nitra and Trenčín, while the eastern and central Slovak regions showed more favorable demographic indicators. This was largely related to differences in infant mortality. It was higher in the western counties in the long term. Although these indicators became more homogenized over time, certain disproportions persisted, which confirms the complexity and long-term nature of demographic changes. |
